A multi-billion-dollar Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) power plant is currently proposed for Oʻahu by JERA, a Japanese LNG exporter, which advanced without meaningful public input, legislative approval, or binding consumer protections. We oppose proposals that would lock the state into decades of imported liquefied natural gas dependence — another fossil fuel working against Hawaiʻi’s clean energy commitments.
Enough Fossil Fuels Already
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is another fossil fuel that has been positioned as a “bridge” energy source for Hawai’i, despite errored claims on cost savings tied to an oil and gas consultancy and a $3B loan for infrastructure that will fall on Hawaiʻi ratepayers. Emission reduction claims are also questionable, while we should be prioritizing reducing dependence on fossil fuels and transitioning away from them. LNG is not the practical solution that it’s being promised as. We believe Hawai’i families should know the risks.

Safety risks associated with LNG infrastructure pose potential hazards and human health impacts near populated areas. Methane leakage from LNG systems occurs throughout the supply chain, including transport and storage.
Our Clean Energy Path Already Exists
Local Power Hawaiʻi supports accelerating the transition to local, renewable energy sources built from the leadership of our communities. Kauaʻi already generates over 50% of its power from renewables, with the lowest electricity rates in the state. Resources show 100% clean energy for Oʻahu is achievable today at a lower cost than LNG — using wind, solar and expanded battery storage. We have the choice.
The Transition We Need
A clean energy future only works if it works for everyone: especially those whose livelihoods are tied to our current energy system, and the working families already asking whether they can afford to stay.
A real transition invests in our people, and includes:
1. Training workers for clean energy jobs our islands need
2. Building local capacity so the economic benefits of renewable energy stay here
3. Ensuring that the communities bearing the highest costs are the first to benefit from this just transition
